    Hi All,

A friend from INPC has managed to secure a pond of 1000 pieces tosai from Suzusei Koi Farm (more popularly known as Seijuro). Seijuro's fishes are not very common in the market, only brought in by a dealer in Old Klang road once in a while. However, their Showa and Ginrin Showa are quite famous with the Europeans and Americans. So let me take the pleasure to announce that these tosai will be used to organize a Grow-Out event for Koikichis like us. All are welcomed to participate. The cost to participate is RM500 per entry and each entry will allow you to select 5 tosai, which you will take home to grow and groom. There is a reason for this format, more explanation and points for discussion to follow in this discussion thread. This is organized for hobbyists like you, so your input will be important. Please register in this forum and list your name down if you are interested.

    Bro,

This is a take-home grow-out where you select 5 tosai (1 lot) to grow at home and bring back the best 2 to compete at the end of 6 months (is 6 months too long)? The reasons for 5 pieces in one lot are:

    1) More chances of selecting good ones as oppose to 1 person take 1 tosai
    2) Can compare different methods of growing with more pieces
    3) In case of mishaps, still got some left to compete at the end
    4) Achieve the economy-of-scale in terms of shipping cost

The 1000 tosai will undergo one round of culling in Japan before shipping to Malaysia, the number to ship depend on the number of participants. Anybody interested to fly over to Japan to do this culling?

The main problem of normal grow-out event is the inability to select the fish that you want because of balloting. We will try to think of a way to address this issue and having 5 tosai (chances) in a way help in this respect. Your input/suggestions/ideas are most welcomed here.

    Elmen,

Count me in for this event. Maybe you can have the batch of 5 preselected in Suzusei and we get to select the batch only and not individual kois. So quality more evenly distributed ?

    thanks

Well lets start a thread on this then:

Another way of doing this is by lucky draw. The person who draws no 1 will get his chance to select the fishes first be it individual or by batch of 5. This will also test the hobbyist eye..

Patrick, the tosai is from this year's spawn so the size is from 8cm to 10cm now and by December they should be about 15cm, hopefully.

TS, welcome to the forum! To have them preselected by Suzusei will be a tough one. But your suggestion triggers an idea. We can sort them into 5 tubs of varying quality and everybody can take a number for their turn and proceed to take 1 tosai from each tub. It's a fair system and yet give the participant the chance to select. Hence, making this an event a test for your selection and growing skill.

Andy just said what I have in mind...
